~ Presidents Message ~

Greetings Everyone

Spring has sprung!! And with it our AGM, which was held last Sunday with 31 members attending – enough for a quorum! – Whew!

There was one visitor WO1 Noema Kopa – Command Warrant Officer from Linton, standing in for COL Mike Van Wiele. (Vice -patron). There were also last minute apologies from GPCAPT Peter Gibson ( Vice- patron) and also from Tom Cormack and Dave Morris from The WWCT District. These persons had initially accepted our invitation, but all had other pressing engagements at the last minute.

There was nothing contentious covered at the AGM. However, our secretary, Mike Oliver has stood down after 4 years in the office – he said he would only do one year! Many thanks for your efficient and valuable contribution Mike. It has really been appreciated. The executive Committee hasn’t therefore changed much. However, in the absence of vice president and a secretary, Rosemary Hollander agreed to fill the position of secretary again and was duly nominated, seconded accepted. Thanks for that Rosemary, I was getting a bit anxious there for a while!! We will look at the Committee portfolios at our next executive meeting.

Our finances are in good shape and we have achieved our reserve target and have been able deposit $3,200.00 into the Welfare Trust – money mainly collected by Ian Bailey with his selling of RSA merchandise. That’s an amazing effort Ian – and we are most grateful! It is also only fitting to be able to support the Welfare Trust as they have supported us very well since we restarted in 2014.

There are far too many people to thank at present, but I do wish to thank the members of the committee for their dedication and support over the last year. I also do wish however, to single out Val Lamb, who in spite of her poor health, continues to run the Women’s Section and has been so involved over the years Also to Tony Van Rysewyk, who had been a former treasurer and the looked after our website and Facebook page – thanks Tony for your support in the past.

Sadly, there is still some bad press regarding our organisation and National Office and we do have to look at compiling our new constitution. However, with the litigation that has been rumoured, we are reluctant to embark on this until things settle down. I said at the AGM that the raison d’etre for the RSA is for the support of veterans and serving Defence personnel. Unfortunately, this airing of dirty linen in public is not helping to build public confidence. Joe, Mike and Bruce attended the District AGM while I was away and they said that Rhys Jones spoke very well and admitted that National Office had made mistakes. However, there was a lot of positive aspects as well and our representatives felt that there was an air of relief at the end of the AGM.. The National Conference at the end of this year will, I hope build on establishing a unified organisation.

News Flash! News Flash! News Flash!

Just received a message from National Office – which certainly does sound positive. Too much to put into this message but they end off saying:-

It is time to put the past differences aside and to work together to ensure wide and thorough coordination of effort.  To achieve these programmes mentioned above, the RNZRSA and its members need to work with each other and with the range of other veteran support agencies and associations that exist.

Don’t forget!! Daylight Saving this Sunday 28 September at 0200hrs. We lose sleep at spring time – the clocks spring forward!

Well, that’s probably enough from me at present.

So, as Samuel Morse said;- “Dear Dot. Must Dash!”

Peter
